Career/Background
Mateusz Karolak graduated in 2010 from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where as a student of Interfaculty Individual Humanistic Studies he attended seminars and lectures in philosophy, anthropology and ethnology. He also spent a year as an Erasmus exchange student at the Institute of European Ethnology at Humboldt University of Berlin. His master thesis, awarded by the Dean of Social Sciences Faculty, investigated Pierre Bourdieu's approach towards a relationship between power and education. In 2009 he was a member of a research team working on the project on migrants in Poland: Foreigners in Poland. Cultural heterogeneity of the large urban center: a case study of Poznań. After completing his studies, he settled in Berlin where he completed an internship in the Polish-German Society Brandenburg, worked as a translator and carried out interviews with freshly arrived Polish immigrants in Berlin, what was a part of the research on Socio-Cultural Integration Processes among New Immigrants in Europe. Since June 2011, he has been a member of the editorial board and later became a co-worker of the academic journal Praktyka Teoretyczna (Theoretical Practice: http://www.praktykateoretyczna.pl/)

Research Interests

His current research interests include political economy, reproduction of inequalities, precarisation of work and its consequences, as well as return migrations, with the particular focus on the decision making process and the subjective experiences of return migrants. Since March 2013 he has been working as an Early Stage Researcher on the topic: Return migrants inclusion and employment: the case of return migration from the UK to Poland.
